Who They Are...
When you think of 90s Hip-Hop, some popular artists of the time may come to mind i.e. B.I.G., Pac, Snoop etc…, but for every mainstream artist there were quite a few lesser known and underrated artists creating music and pushing the culture forward….
1992 - January
Group was formed
After disbanding a previous group, Maestro founded Da Matrix and moved from Long Island to North Philadelphia to become the head producer for independent label Phatt Records. During this time Maestro was able to develop his craft while producing and developing many local artists.
1996
1st Indie Release
After returning from Philly, Maestro partnered up with Maffmatiks to form a production company, Equality Enterprises. They would soon begin recording in the infamous studio run by the Bomb Squad who produced for Pubic Enemy, Ice Cube as well as Busta Rhymes. Shortly there after, they would go on to release their first “cass-single” entitled “9 X Outta 10”. Throughout the year they organized several network events and showcases for up and coming talent throughout New York.
1997
BOOM BOW/DON'T STOP
Da Matrix released a 2nd single on vinyl entitled, “Boom Bow / Don’t Stop”. They would continuously record and perform throughout the East Coast and gain a reputation for their high energy stage show. Later that same year, Da Matrix went down in Apollo Theatre history as 1 of a handful of Hip Hop groups to win first place.
1998
Signed with Tommy Boy
After a performance and panel appearance at BMCC(Boston Music Conference), Da Matrix was introduced to Tommy Boy’s Chris Atlas who later signed the duo to Tommy Boy Black label. Later that year, Da Matrix performed on a few dates on the Lyricist Lounge tour hosted by De La Soul.
2000
“Hip Hop 101” is released
“Hip Hop 101” is released on the Tommy Boy Black Label featuring Da Matrix track ‘Beat Biter” an underground favorite and noted standout track on the album.
